It’s Official. Ponch the Dutch & Jimmy Flipshyt are going to HELL…

December 20th, 2015

yo yo it’s your boy Ponch here. if your heading down to your local holy house today, please light a candle and throw a tenner in the pot for the homeboy flipshyt and myself.
See a while back, one of our local arts connects Rick B asked us if we wanted to get involved in a mass collaborative project involving tons of c-town peeps. Rick B flicked us a few images of his works and asked us to make a track based on it…the rest is pure blasphemy..well not really…
depending what you take out of the art..i guess…BUT it is FUN to be ME! and I enjoyed making this track, even if it means potential eternal fire and demon rape.. check it below…

Sincerely
The man in black – PONCH

A beatmakers journey – A guide on the do’s and dont’s when entering a beat battle

February 27th, 2014

bmThe story of how I made it to the 2014 Australasian Beatmaker Invitational… and lost.
By  Apollo Grimez

So, was sitting in my little home studio when I got an e-mail about the 2014 Australasian Beatmaker Invitational, which as far as this part of the world goes, is the Olympics for Aussie Beatmakers. Hey, it’s sponsored by Akai Pro. That’s my shit right thurr! Oops, turns out Queensland is not part of Australia or at least the rest of the country doesn’t think we have dope producers or paying punters that would justify a gig in Brisbane. Well, I was dead broke anyways and since Cairns is quite a distance from just about anywhere, I resigned to the fact that I wasn’t even going to try my luck. Read the rest of this entry »

Phaze 2 @ The Jack

November 26th, 2013

The Jack played host to the second ‘Phaze’ fundraiser gig for 2013, which saw the good ol’ beat basement crew boogie down with Seeds of Aether, J-Point and One Sixth, all in the name of charity.

Hats go off to all involved with the event and an extra special ‘m’mahn!’ goes to Apollo Grimez for putting in blood, sweat and tears to make this event happen. Massive kudos to One Sixth for coming up and rocking out. What a down to earth cat. His performance was dope and even though it wasn’t a packed out event, the brother gave it socks and even rocked out amongst the punters (see video..).

A great night t’was, with all local elements core heads in attendance. Quality, not Quantity be how the north rolls.  Cairns continues to build.

Y’all know this…

Ricky

Fluent. Cursed by a Merch Table.

November 16th, 2013

Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoa Yoaaahhh

Back in Aug 13 my boy Dex hits me about the Basement getting involved with a Cairns Festival esplanade event. I had a massive plate of ‘everyday bullznit’ to chow down at the time PLUS the only material I had ready to go was Gritty Committee tracks (in all honesty I don’t think Napalm’n half the state with the heat was in the ‘spirit’ of the festival)so I passed the buck on the logistics …

Nonetheless, I committed to Maning a Beat Basement merch table while the B-side took on the pretty much everything else. I actually got pretty enthusiastic bout the whole thang. I had Visions of WW2 style gun pits.. with me, under fire, pumping Diggis, Context & Jimmy CD’s and the newly (the night before) MINT graf’d LP’s into the face of every tom dick and harry that stepped to the Nahd that day…*

Anyways. Come game time, I was sat like nancy from the CWA on a rickety table, stage left of a set up that was SO pro large it would’ve given Mick Jagger wood.

Booming sound. Dedicated Sound People. Sturdy large stage.

God damn, with more planning, we  could have shot some amazing footage here, especially as all the artists brought in BIG…but..hmmm

All good. I sold some CD’s for my crew. I even got to do some quick RUN & GUN footage whilst the homey J-Point was representing (courtesy of Context who sat/guarded the merch table). I wish I had more.

But heres a quick glance. At the FLUENT gig. On the Esplanade. In Cairns.

Ricky

The Base’MINT’ Grits Project.. a handful of snaps ..

November 15th, 2013

When it comes to our local scene, we always look to do something different. A couple of months back whilst planning our monthly phat friday event, we came up with the idea to panel up 21 white Basement Grits LP’s and ring in one of our local graft connects to get busy on it. Of course it made it EXTRA special when our compadre MINT put his hand up and started shaking cans before we even locked it in official.
NEK MUNNIT
It’s another Phat Friday, LP’s are up and MINT’s tappin’ the caps. Myself & Dex Mo are dropping needles and there’s a ton of peeps in the place. Hip Hop Joes, Average Joes, the works.

Develop & Apollo Grimez even break out the MP’s and for a couple of hours so Dex & I soak up the vibes, which, we rarely get to do at the same time as one of us is pumping BOOM BAP through the tables and into YA cranium NAH’M SAYIN’!

Gallery: Phat Friday October 2013 – The Return of the Back Stage

November 14th, 2013

October 2013 saw the return of PHAT FRIDAY to the back area of the Green Ant Cantina. As per usual the night was filled with Phat Tunes courtesy of Dex Mo & Ricky Grits, plus some DOPE open mic activity and a (pretty much 6 hour straight) non-stop breaking’ session from ORB and his fellow crew o’ B-Boys. Plenty of local scene heads in effect and supporting as well as some new faces. Phat Friday CONTINUES to help build the scene, aided of course by good food/good beer…Good Times
